In Spain utility companies and insurance companies manage the direct debit mandates. When you cancel a contract the company can no longer charge your account. If you are being charged without your consent you can ask us to refund the payment to your account. You need to request the refund within 56 days of the payment.

Note that to be in tittle to a refund the cancellation need to be carried out according to the utility/insurance company's policies. Most insurance companies in Spain require you to cancel your insurance 30 days prior to the renewal date, unless this is done the insurance will be renewed and you will have to pay for the insurance.
